In industrial manufacturing, the punching machine is an extremely widely used piece of equipment, commonly used in high-risk operations such as metal stamping and forming.
However, its “high efficiency” also means “high risk” — once an operational error occurs, it can cause minor injuries at best, and disability at worst.
At this moment, the “safety light curtain” becomes particularly important.
It is the “invisible guardian” that protects operator safety. Today, let’s talk about: the working principle of the safety light curtain on a punching machine.
What is a safety light curtain?
A safety light curtain, also known as a safety light grid, is a non-contact infrared detection device.
It consists of two parts: a transmitter and a receiver. By forming a dense curtain of infrared beams between the working areas,
once any foreign object (such as a hand or arm) enters its detection area, the system will immediately respond,
interrupting the punching machine’s action to ensure the operator’s safety.
The working principle of the safety light curtain on a punching machine
When the punching machine begins operation, the safety light curtain is automatically activated and continuously emits infrared beams.
These beams form a “wall of light” between the transmitter and receiver, covering the entire area where the die descends.
As long as the beams remain unobstructed, the punching machine can operate normally according to the program.
Once any object blocks any of the beams — even just a single finger — the system will immediately detect the “beam interruption signal”,
and instantly send a stop command to the punching machine’s control system, halting the pressing action.
This reaction is almost a “millisecond-level emergency stop”, ensuring that the dangerous movement is terminated before the operator contacts the die.
It can be said that it is an “invisible barrier” that can determine the fate of a pair of hands.
Why is the safety light curtain so critical?
Avoiding human error injuries
Whether it’s an experienced worker or a novice, a moment of negligence can lead to serious consequences, and the light curtain acts as the final safeguard.
Replacing traditional mechanical guards
Traditional barriers and covers not only limit operation but are also prone to failure, whereas the light curtain is more flexible and intelligent.
Intelligent linkage control
Modern light curtains can seamlessly integrate with PLCs and servo control systems, precisely controlling the punching machine’s start and stop,
and enhancing the overall level of automation.
